H. Pettus Randall, III, Chairman of Randall Publishing Company, died September
7, 2002 at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa after a lengthy battle with
pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
Named the nation's sixth fastest-growing publishing company by Folio:
magazine, Randall Publishing produces magazines, periodicals, directories
and websites in three primary industries: construction, trucking and industrial.
An Alabama native, Randall became president of Randall Publishing upon
his father's death in 1976, guiding the company during a 27-year period
of exponential growth. He became chairman of the board and chief executive
officer in 1984.
"Pettus Randall’s entrepreneurial vision is the platform on which our
company's success was built," said Randall Publishing Chief Executive
Officer Michael Reilly. "He was our mentor and our friend. His legacy
will continue to guide us."
Founded in 1934, Randall Publishing is one of the nation's largest privately
held trade publishing companies, employing more than 500 associates. Holdings
include more than 35 magazines, directories, periodicals and Web sites.
Randall is a graduate of The University of Alabama, earning his bachelor's
degree in history and English in 1967, and his J.D. degree from the UA
School of Law in 1971. He also attended the New York University Graduate
School of Business.
Pettus was involved in numerous
civic, fraternal and religious organizations, including the Tuscaloosa
Chamber of Commerce, the Tuscaloosa Arts Council, the Boys and Girls Club
of Tuscaloosa, the Episcopal Church and more, Pettus was a well-known
and highly regarded citizen of Tuscaloosa.
Randall is survived by his wife Cathy, daughters Jaynie Rogers and Kate,
and son Pettus IV.
